It seems like it was only yesterday when we said goodbye to 2020 and welcomed the New Year in. In reality though, that was over five months ago. And while you probably set some lofty goals for yourself when the year started, just how many have been achieved? We would like to encourage you to take a moment to think back to those goals you set back then. Are you still working towards them? How many of them have you accomplished and which ones, if any, have you abandoned? Every now and then, its always a good idea to take stock of what has been achieved and what’s left. In that spirit, we would like to share some useful tips on how to focus on your goals. We will also share some of the benefits of focus and how it can help anyone achieve great things.

Did you know that eagles have such extraordinary vision that they can focus on prey from two miles away? That is incredible. Humans on the other hand do not have such exceptional eyesight. However, we do have the ability to focus on our tasks, goals, and dreams till they become a reality.

Despite this capacity, many times, we are unable to focus on our goals because of all sorts of distractions. Its interesting to note that sometimes, the issues that draw our focus away, though distractions, may be legitimate issues. For example, issues such as stress, finances, and family obligations may distract from the larger picture. So how do we deal with such distractions? We will share some helpful tips later in this post.

The Multiple Benefits of Focus

Research has shown that even though multitasking is generally viewed positively, it can reduce productivity by up to 40%. That is a staggering and shocking amount, don’t you think? One would naturally assume that multitasking would increase productivity. That, however, would be wrong.

Staying focused on a task helps direct one’s mental efforts and energy towards its speedy accomplishment. Here are some other benefits of staying focused:

  1. Staying focused builds momentum.
  2. When you focus on your goals, it helps increase productivity.
  3. Being focused helps reduce stress which in turn helps one stay healthy.

In the next section, we will share useful tips on how to focus on your goals and achieve them.

Six Useful Tips on How to Focus on your Goals
  1. Write out your Goals: Something unique happens when you pen your goals on paper. That initial, simple, act of writing down what you want to do helps you commit to doing it. Additionally, it helps set out those goals in a clear manner, which also helps with focus on actionable steps. The outcome is that when goals are set forth clearly, they have a greater chance of success.
  2. Manage your Time effectively: Effective time management is another great way to stay focused on your goals. Have you ever had a seemingly busy day with nothing to really show for it? If so, you probably know how important time management is. The effective use of time can reduce waste, avoid distractions, and allow for success to arrive faster.
  3. Carefully build a Plan and stick to It: You’ve probably heard about setting SMART goals in order to succeed. SMART is an acronym that means setting Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound goals. In other words, don’t just write out your goals, be SMART about them. The more effort you put into planning out your goals, the greater the chances of its success.
  4. Avoid Procrastinating: Another way to focus on your goals, is to pay attention to procrastination and other acts that steal time. Once you identify the reasons when you procrastinate, you can deal with them and move forward.
  5. Track your Progress regularly: In addition, every so often, like we are doing today, track how well you’re doing with your pursuits. This way, you can evaluate what works, what needs to be corrected and if your goal can realistically be achieved.
  6. Try the Pomodoro Technique: The Pomodoro technique is a time management technique that breaks up tasks into 25-minute intervals. Usually, this is also followed by a 5-minute break before another interval. The idea is to shut out all distractions during that 25-minute period and focus only on the task at hand. This technique has been found to be extremely effective.

How do you ensure that you focus on your goals? What techniques do you use to block out distractions? Lastly, like we asked earlier in this post, how are you doing in the pursuit of your 2021 goals? Are there any specific targets you’ve been able to achieve? Let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment at the end of this post. As always, we would love to hear from you.
