For over a hundred years, John D. Rockefeller has been the subject of both admiration and controversy in business. From his humble beginnings as a bookkeeper, he built his businesses and personal wealth to almost unfathomable heights. For example, in 1913, his personal wealth was worth the equivalent today of over Four hundred and Eighteen billion dollars. He was the first ever American billionaire and is considered by many as the richest person in modern history. Rockefeller spent the last 40yrs of his life as a philanthropist. Records show that at the time of his death, he had given more than half his entire wealth away. The controversy that surrounded Rockefeller revolved around his monopoly over oil through his company, Standard Oil. In the late 1800’s, with the discovery of crude oil, kerosene and later, gasoline became household items. Kerosene was used in lamps all over America and gasoline was used in automobiles and other industrial machinery. At the height of his wealth, Standard Oil controlled over 90% of the US Oil industry. He did this by buying out his competitors and consolidating their businesses into his. However, in 1911, the US Supreme Court ruled that his company was too big for competitors and ordered it dismantled. Standard Oil was dismantled into over thirty smaller companies such as ExxonMobil and Chevron.

  1. His father was a Con Artist. He was known to falsely referred to himself as a doctor who had found a cure for cancer.
  2. His mother on the other hand, was a devout Baptist. From an early age, she had instilled in him the habit of saving and thriftiness. These were lessons he used much later in life in his philanthropic endeavors.
  3. John D. Rockefeller built his first oil refinery in Cleveland, Ohio in 1863. He had sensed the potential for growth in the Oil business and decided to invest everything he had into it.
  4. As an adult, he celebrated September 26 every year as the day he got his official start in business every year.
  5. He retired at age 56 and spent the next 40 years giving towards charitable endeavors. Some of the most notable including the founding of the University of Chicago, Rockefeller University, and a University in Philippines.
  6. Before his death, he gave away nearly half of his fortune to medical foundations, Churches, universities, and centers for arts.
