How to deal with Fear and achieve Success this Year

We are at the onset of a new year and for many, as you can imagine, achieving success is paramount. However, despite our lofty goals, unless we learn how to deal with fear, they might never become a reality. This is because fear places mental restrictions on its victims. Among other things, it restricts the flow of creativity and limits us in all we do. Sadly, many go through life with all kinds of fears, never facing or dealing with them. This year though, if we will achieve success, we must face and overcome our fears. So, in this post, we will discuss the subject of fear, its many effects, and how to overcome fear. We believe this post will help our readers understand how fear restricts, how to overcome and achieve success in 2021. 

Everyone has been fearful at one point or another in life. As a matter of fact, in some cases, fear can be a good thing. For instance, when we were children, we were thought to fear fire. We were thought not to grab at its dancing flames just because it looked pretty or risk getting burnt. In such cases, fear helps us learn to take caution and exercise self-restraint.

However, today, we will be discussing a different dimension of fear. One that if left unchallenged in our lives, can keep us from ever truly becoming successful. To illustrate, there is a widely known saying about riding horses. The saying goes that while learning to ride a horse, if you fall off, you must get back on. Otherwise, you will develop a mental thing about horses and never be able to ride one. Ridiculous as it may seem, it is a theory that has been proven all around the world. This type of fear is gripping, mental, restrictive, and even crippling.

In the next section, we will take a brief look at what fear is. We will then move on to discuss in later sections, its effects and how to deal with it.

What is Fear?

According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, fear is an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger. Sometimes though, fear can stem from imagined dangers or worries.

Four things Fear does to People

Like we said earlier, fear is usually triggered by a perceived threat. However, besides providing a warning for impending danger, fear also has lasting effects. Here are five ways fear affects people:

  1. Fear affects ones Physical Health: Fear has the capacity to weaken one’s immune system and cause cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and other physical problems.
  2. Fear can shut down one’s Brain: In extreme cases, fear can prevent us from taking necessary action. It can also limit our mental capacity and ability for creative expression.
  3. Fear affects the actions one takes: When the brain senses fear, the area of the brain that harnesses reasoning and judgment becomes affected. This in turn makes it difficult to make good decisions or think clearly.
  4. Fear can affect one’s Job performance: Generally, when the brain is in fight or flight mode, its ability to focus becomes compromised. The resulting effect of this is a loss of focus, missed deadlines and reduced job performance.
How to deal with Fear

Like we said earlier, fear can have crippling effects on one’s ability to make decisions. For example, if mishandled, experiencing failure can have long term effects. It could make one retreat altogether from that endeavor because it failed the first time. As you can imagine, such unresolved fears could lead one to live a miserable and boring life.

Fortunately, there are several, proven ways to deal with fear. In this section, we highlight four ways to deal with it:

  1. Deal with the Fear directly: By this, we mean take decisive action in spite of your fears. As in the case of falling off a horse, build an inner resilience that helps you get back up when knocked down. Additionally, face your fears head-on and refuse defeat. This would be as opposed to accepting failure and living in fear.
  2. Embrace Positivity: Whenever fear strikes, refuse to allow it to stall your progress. Instead of expecting something bad to happen, expect positive things. An optimistic, positive mentality will prevent fear from derailing your success.
  3. Engage the Services of a Therapist: For some unusual cases, therapy sessions with a licensed Psychologist can help one deal with fear. Fears brought on by a phobias, anxiety, or specific events, may require a different approach for resolution. In such cases, talking to a therapist could be an excellent way to work through your fears.
  4. Join a Support group: In some cases, all you may need is to join a support group. Usually, with the support of others, we will feel confident and strong enough to deal with our fears.
