For example, we know for a fact that when teammates work well together, they become more efficient and productive. So, in this post, we will discuss the importance of teamwork, its advantages and how to encourage teamwork at work. We hope this post inspires you to be a team player and encourage the team spirit where you work.

Teamwork can be beautifully explained using Gestalt psychology. In simple terms, it posits that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. In our context, it means that better results are produced through teamwork than combined individual effort. However, what is teamwork and what are its other benefits? In the next section, we will briefly discuss what teamwork is.

What is Teamwork?

According to the English Dictionary, teamwork is “coordinated effort on the part of a group of persons acting together as a team or in the interests of a common cause”. Here are a few things we can deduce from this definition of teamwork:

  1. Teamwork involves coordinated effort
  2. It is made by a group of people working together
  3. The interests of the group of people are always aligned.

So we see that teamwork helps leverage the combined efforts and resources of teammates to reach a pre-defined, common goal.

In the next section, we will review ten benefits of teamwork.

Ten Benefits of Teamwork

Here are ten advantages of teamwork:

  1. It Improves Productivity: Working together as a team allows for shared workloads, and ideas. In addition, it also encourages creativity and problem solving.
  2. Increases Innovation: When people work together, they produce creative, innovative, and practical solutions to problems than when working alone. It is a proven fact that a coordinated team approach always increases innovation.
  3. Enhances Flexibility: Teamwork in the workplace also allows for flexible work schedules as team members are trained to handle multiple tasks.
  4. Gaining Diverse Perspectives: Working together also allows teammates to gain new perspectives on how to analyze problems and find solutions.
  5. Creates strong Work Ethic and Team Spirit: Another advantage of teamwork is that it creates a Team Spirit that unites teammates. Through constant work with others, solving problems and achieving success, strong work ethics are also developed.
  6. Fosters Creativity and Learning: Like we said earlier, when people work together in a team, it inspires creativity. Such creative problem solving also encourages learning and further creativity.
  7. Teamwork builds Trust: Another benefit of teamwork is that it builds trust. Teamwork, when done right promotes strong working relationships that build trust and extend beyond the work environment.
  8. It blends Complementary Strengths: Every individual possesses different skillsets. Working together as a team helps harness those strengths and use them for the collective good. By combining individual strengths, teams can accomplish more together than apart.
  9. Encourages Healthy Risk-Taking: Team members are more likely to take calculated risks when they know they belong to an efficient team. This is so because they receive support and reassurance from the group that gives them the freedom to explore options and take more risks.
  10. It teaches Conflict Resolution Skills: The final benefit of teamwork on our list is that it teaches conflict resolution. It is quite natural for disagreements to arise among teammates. However, being part of an effective team helps one learn how to resolve such conflicts. As you can imagine, one of the benefits of such training is development of conflict resolution skills.

These benefits are just a few reasons why teamwork in the workplace is essential to the success of any business.

In the final section of this post, we will discuss useful ways to encourage teamwork.

How to encourage Teamwork at Work

Anyone that has ever been part of a dysfunctional team knows that good teamwork doesn’t just happen. Teamwork that produces tangible results requires an effective leader to encourage such teamwork. In this final section, we share five useful tips on how to encourage teamwork.

  1. Lead the Way: A good leader leads the way for members of his team by example. To encourage teamwork, a leader must be willing to work with her team and welcome input from teammates.
  2. Keep Communication Lines Open: By keeping communication lines open among team members, a leader can ensure that everyone’s contribution is received. Additionally, such policies allow for management to receive useful feedback and ideas from teammates.
  3. Give Your Team an Active Role in Big Decisions: While all decisions cannot be made by consensus, sometimes it may be useful to get external contributions. These could be in the form of input from teammates who have firsthand knowledge of issues to be decided on. When teammates know their input is valued, they tend to put more effort into their contributions.
  4. Reward great Performance: Another way to encourage teamwork at work is to reward the success of your team. Whenever a team successfully concludes a project, reward their hard work and dedication. Even little rewards are shown to be effective in encouraging further teamwork.
  5. Fuel Teamwork with the right Resources: For a team to be effective, they must have the right tools and resources to perform their tasks. By providing the tools necessary for teamwork, you show your teammates that you are committed to the team’s success.

What other benefits of teamwork have you experiences as a leader of team member? Are there other benefits you’ve experiences that are not listed here? Feel free to leave us your thoughts and comments at the end of this post. As always, we would love to hear from you.
