Have you ever started a project with a lot of excitement, only to lose motivation after a while? Or are there tasks that used to excite you that have now become chores whenever you do them? If you’ve found that things that used to excite you no longer do, you may be losing motivation. The good news however is that like a lot of other people, you’re not alone. People lose motivation for several reasons, some of which we will explore later in this post. However, if one does not recognize its telltale signs, it could go on indefinitely without a solution. In this post, we highlight ways to recognize loss of motivation, why people lose their motivation and how to get motivated. Our core message to you here is that you don’t have to go through life without purpose or passion. Also, you can regain those passions you seem to have lost and get motivated once again.

It is interesting to note that people never procrastinate about something they are motivated about. As a matter of fact, if you are excited about a task, you’ll be eager to start it. So, we can assume that procrastination is a sign that one is losing motivation on a task. Being able to identify such signs is helpful so it can be addressed.

How do you know if you’re losing or have lost your motivation? In the next section, we share five ways to tell if you’re losing motivation.

How to know if You are losing Motivation

Like we said earlier, a lot of people often feel unhappy about projects and tasks they’ve always enjoyed. What is even more shocking is that sometimes, these feelings seem to surface so sudden. In reality though, people don’t lose motivation all of a sudden. More often than not however, it is a gradual, unrecognized process.

Here are five ways to know if you’ve lost or are losing your motivation:

  1. Being bored about regular daily routines.
  2. No longer being satisfied with what you’ve done.
  3. Feeling stressed over projects or assignments you’re doing.
  4. Comparing yourself to others.
  5. Feeling like you are too insignificant to make a difference.

Additionally, like we pointed out at the beginning of this post, procrastination is another sign of lost motivation.

In the next section, we will take a look at some reasons why people lose motivation.

Five Reasons Why People lose Motivation

Here are five reasons why people lose motivation:

  1. Loss of Passion: Passion is what drives people to do the things they set out to do. It makes one enthusiastic about a set goal or purpose. So, if one loses passion about a task or project, naturally, one will also lose motivation about it.
  2. A lack of Purpose: Purpose gives one direction. Without purpose, nothing can be achieved. This is why being passionate or talented is not enough. Without purpose, there is nowhere to direct those passions and talents.
  3. Not Setting actionable Goals: Sometimes, attempting to pursue purpose can be overwhelming. The best way to pursue purpose is by setting smaller, targeted and actionable goals. Doing this gives one control over when it should be achieved, and how success is measured.
  4. Feeling Overwhelmed: Being overwhelmed can sometimes make one give up altogether on a task. Instead, when you feel overwhelmed, take a step back and break the task into smaller, easy to achieve tasks. As the famous saying by Desmond Tutu goes, the way to eat an Elephant is one bite at a time.
  5. Living an Unhealthy Lifestyle: Engaging in unhealthy activities such as lack of sleep, stress, or not exercising can be detrimental to one’s health. This can ultimately lead to burnout and lost motivation.
How to get Motivated after losing Motivation

In the last two sections, we discussed how to know if you’re losing motivation and reasons people lose motivation. In this section, we will share some ideas on how to get motivated again when you’re losing or have lost your motivation. Regardless of what you do or where you apply these principles, they will help you rediscover your motivations.

  1. Identify or Rediscover a clear Purpose: After years of doing the same thing repeatedly, it’s easy to forget why you started in the first place. Going back to the basics and why you started a project can help with rediscovery of purpose, meaning and passion. This solution applies regardless of whether it’s a project, business, relationship or task.
  2. Build your Momentum: Once you rediscover why you started that project, begin to work on it gradually till you build momentum. Building momentum, as opposed to jumping right into the thick of things is necessary so you don’t get overwhelmed.
  3. Set SMART Goals: Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound goals are important. This is so because, succeeding with set goals will encourage you to strive to achieve even more.
  4. Create a Supportive Environment: No matter how small or big you think your purpose is, you will need others to succeed at it. We all need people who believe in us and create a positive environment that supports what we stand for. In addition to everything on this list, sometimes we also need encouragement and support from others to stay motivated.
  5. Be Optimistic and anticipate Positive Results: Being optimistic gives one a positive outlook on life and helps one take advantage of opportunities when they come. Additionally, being optimistic boosts one’s morale and keeps one motivated.
