Born into an influential family, she was niece to President Theodore Roosevelt and wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. However, interestingly, she was impactful not just because of her family ties. At a time when it was controversial for women to be outspoken or even in politics, she led the US delegation at the United Nations. In addition, she oversaw the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.   1. Eleanor was President Theodore Roosevelt’s niece. Interestingly, President Theodore Roosevelt was also Uncle to Franklin D. Roosevelt, who later became President.
  2. She married her fifth cousin, once removed, Franklin D. Roosevelt with whom she had six children.
  3. She is the longest serving First Lady of the United States because during World War II, her husband served as President for twelve years.
  4. Eleanor Roosevelt served as the first Chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights. During this time, she oversaw the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was a difficult job that required diplomatic tact and contributions from all 58 UN Member States at the time. Today, the document is still considered “groundbreaking” and the “first instrument of international law”.
  5. Eleanor stayed in Politics after her husband died. In fact, her most important contributions were made in her later years. In 1999, on Gallup’s list of Most Widely Admired People of the 20th Century, she was ranked ninth.
