In this post, we discuss how to deal with failure. In addition, we will also discuss how to overcome failure and move on to bigger and better things. Hard as it may be to acknowledge, failure is a part of life and is sometimes necessary for great success. Nevertheless, failure, in whatever area of life, can be hard to deal with. It takes a special and disciplined mind to understand that failure does not necessarily mean the end of a venture. In fact, failure can be seen as an opportunity to take a step back and re-strategize. So, like we said, in this post, we will share the best ways for dealing with failure and overcoming it. We hope this post inspires you to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back to work.

2020 is gradually coming to an end. For many, this news is met with mixed feelings. So much has happened this year that has been both challenging and inspiring. If you will, take a minute to look back at the last nine months of the year. What were your goals for the year when you first started out? What were your new year resolutions? How many of them have you been able to keep? If you’re like most people, you’ve not been able to keep them all. This however does not make you a failure. As a matter of fact, it means you have more work to do before the year finally ends.

Perhaps you started to pursue your goals but got thrown off course because of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. Or maybe you started things off but had to stop you had health, family, or financial issues. Regardless of what happened, its important to understand that dealing with failure is necessary for overcoming failure.

With that said, in the next section, we will take a brief look at how to deal with failure.

How to deal with Failure

When handled incorrectly, failure can be demoralizing and debilitating. More specifically, it can make one give up on lofty, life changing dreams. Its sad to say but some people’s success stopped at the point when they allowed their failures to define them. While your failures are indeed your own, they should not be allowed to define you.

On that note, here are four practical ways to deal with failure:

  1. Recognize and accept your emotions: It is hard to separate emotions from daily life. The same way we have feelings of excitement and pride when we succeed, we also feel sad when we fail. In such cases, the best way to deal with failure is to let those emotions out. Medical research shows that it is unhealthy to keep negative emotions bottled up or hidden. Rather, by allowing yourself to feel those emotions, you allow free yourself to move on.
  2. Take responsibility for your failure: Paul Odafe Utho’s quote on the subject is quite definitive. He said “If you fail, it is your fault. If you succeed, it is also your fault. Every man is responsible for his action”. Another practical way to deal with failure is to take responsibility for it. While there may be extenuating circumstances that may have caused it, ultimately, your success or failure is your fault.
  3. Find reasons to keep trying: Dealing with failure requires a certain amount of persistence and determination. Persistent people realize that when they fail, it only means that their current plan failed. It does not mean that their ultimate goal cannot be achieved. Through persistence, alternative ways to succeed can be found and implemented.
  4. Outline a new plan of action: Along with persistence, new strategy is sometimes necessary to overcome failure. After all, if all the variables remain the same, chances are that the results will also be the same.

How have you dealt with failure in your own life, family, or business? What additional steps do you take that are not listed here? Let us know in the comments section at the end of this post. We would love to hear from you.

How to overcome Failure

So, lets assume you’ve been able to deal with the failure you faced. What should be next on your agenda? The next step should be overcoming failure. In this section, we list practical ways to overcome failure.

  1. Accept that you failed but do not accept the Situation: In other words, do not settle for the status quo. Do not lose your confidence in the fact that you can succeed.
  2. Review and Re-Strategize: Like we mentioned earlier, come up with a new strategy to tackle the problem. Review mistakes that were made and identify points of failure and their causes. Also, use lessons learnt to come up with a new strategy to tackle the problem.
  3. Seek Counsel: Many times, problems that may have caused one person to fail have already been resolved by someone else. It makes practical sense to seek advise from such people in such cases. As the saying goes, don’t reinvent the wheel.
  4. Be Persistent: Sometimes, certain tasks need to be tackled from multiple angles before success is achieved. In addition, the process of persistence may shed light on how best to realign efforts to achieve success. In other words, don’t give up after a few tries. Keep at it and ultimately, you will succeed.

What practical ways have you used to deal with and overcome failure? What rational kept you persistent when you felt like giving up? Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions. We would love to hear from you.
