Is there really anything to be grateful for in 2020? While this year does mark the start of a new decade, has it really produced anything worth being thankful for? If you’re like most people, you probably feel this way deep down and can’t wait for 2020 to end. In fact, some would love it if they could rewind the year and start over, only this time, knowing what’s to come. Sadly though, as far as we know, that is not possible. In any case, if you feel that way, we wrote this post for you, so do read it through. To answer the question posed earlier, yes, there are things to be grateful for. In this post, we will list ten things to be grateful for in 2020. We will also share some reasons why being thankful is so important and a few thoughtful quotes on gratitude. Basic as they may be, we hope they inspire in you, a fresh outlook on the rest of the year.

To be sure, so far, 2020 has been quite a year. Think about COVID-19 for a minute. Who knew that there was anything in existence that could bring the world to a screeching halt, literally! And then of course, think about the additional effects of the Coronavirus on families, businesses, and national economies. It seems that everyone alive today has been affected by the virus, in one way or the other.

Yet for all the deaths and losses, there are still so many things to be grateful for this year. Zig Ziglar, the Author and Motivational Speaker said it best in this quote:

Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.

We strongly agree with him.

Why Thanksgiving is Important

While at first glance, it may not seem obvious, but there are so many things to be thankful for in 2020. For example, think back to when the coronavirus pandemic started. Do you remember the fear and uncertainty everyone had? The worries about family, friends, and finances. Now think about today. Somehow, you got through those tough times and are still here today, despite those fears.

Here are five reasons why thanksgiving is important:

  1. Regardless of your religious beliefs, being thankful helps strengthen your faith.
  2. Thanksgiving increases one’s overall happiness by helping you see specific things to be thankful for.
  3. It provides a beacon of hope and confidence during uncertainty that things will get better.
  4. It helps one understand the truly important things in one’s life.
  5. In general, thanksgiving boosts our attitude towards life by keeping us grateful.

In the next section, we will share some thoughtful quotes on gratitude. We hope they inspire you to focus on the good things in your life.

Five Thoughtful Quotes on Gratitude

Here are five wonderful quotes on gratitude that we hope will encourage you to be grateful today:

  1. Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things. – Robert Brault
  2. If a fellow isn’t thankful for what he’s got, he isn’t likely to be thankful for what he’s going to get. – Frank A. Clark
  3. Gratitude turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…it makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. – Melody Beattie
  4. Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough. – Oprah Winfrey
  5. The world has enough beautiful mountains and meadows, spectacular skies and serene lakes. It has enough lush forests, flowered fields, and sandy beaches. It has plenty of stars and the promise of a new sunrise and sunset every day. What the world needs more of is people to appreciate and enjoy it. – Michael Josephson

Ten Things to be Grateful for in 2020

Without a doubt, being grateful when things are difficult is not the easiest thing to do. Regardless, we encourage you to focus on the good that has happened so far this year. Here is a list of ten things to be grateful for in 2020:

  1. The Gift of Life
  2. Being Surrounded by Family and Friends
  3. Having a Safe place to Live
  4. Having full use of all your Senses
  5. Free time to have Fun
  6. Small Wins and Accomplishments
  7. Fresh Air and the ability to Breathe
  8. A Sound Mind and a Healthy Body
  9. Technology
  10. Freedom to make your own Choices

Granted, these things may seem simplistic and perhaps even basic. However, remember that these basic things of life are not available to some people. Did you know that so far, the worldwide death toll from COVID-19 is almost 1 million people? Or did you know that so far, almost 29 million people have contracted the virus? Despite these realities though, you have the immeasurable gift of life. That is a lot to be grateful for in 2020.

Final Thoughts

Before we conclude this post, we would like to leave you with some final thoughts. Perhaps your circumstances have been particularly hard this year. Or maybe you have suffered the loss of a loved one or lost your job due to COVID-19. We encourage you to take heart.

Remember that while some things have been lost, all is not lost. As the saying goes, where there is life, there is hope. So do not lose your hope. You can recover from whatever devastating effects you’ve faced this year and hopefully even end 2020 on a high note.

Feel free to leave us your thoughts and comments. As always, we love hearing from our readers.

Today’s Funny Quote

It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them. Ralph Waldo Emerson

As is our custom, we end this post with a funny quote. Our funny quote today is by Ralph Waldo Emerson about friendships:

It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.

When did you last speak or hangout with your best friends? Give them a call or send them a text message today so they know you’re thinking about them. It could add a bit of sunshine to an otherwise gloomy day.
