In our post today, we will review five important benefits of goal setting. We live in a fast-paced world where everyone wants to be successful. Everyone wants to accomplish something great and meaningful. Everyone wants to invent something that changes the world. Sadly though, the reality is that only a few people ever actually accomplish any of these lofty dreams. We believe one reason why is because most people don’t set realistic goals. So today, we will discuss why goal setting is important, how to set realistic goals and its many benefits.

In the ‘80’s and ‘90’s, there was a term used to define the crisis middle aged adults were going through. Mostly identified in middle aged men, it was called a mid-life crisis. It usually happened to men in their late 30’s and early 40’s. In general, they believed that they had spent half their lives already and barely had anything to show for it. This realization caused them to make reckless decisions or take on frivolous projects to give themselves that sense of accomplishment. Most often however, such reckless decisions rarely ended up producing anything meaningful.

Our point here is that most mid-life crisis are caused by the humbling realization that one’s life goals have not been accomplished. One way to fix that is by understanding the importance of goal setting and how to set realistic goals.

In the next section, we will take a brief look at what it means to set goals.

What is Goal Setting?

A goal, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary is the end toward which effort is directed”. So, we can say that Goal setting, is the process by which these ends, which are to be achieved, are determined. As you can imagine, goal setting involves planning and determining necessary steps needed to accomplish specific goals.

How to set Realistic Goals

Like we discussed earlier in this post, failed goals can lead to disappointment in life. Even worse, it can lead to such things like a mid-life crisis or depression. While a lot of importance is laid on setting goals, equal importance should also be laid on setting realistic goals. This is because no matter how lofty a goal is, if it is not realistic, it will never be accomplished. In other words, to accomplish anything meaningful, realistic goals must be set and pursued. So how do you set realistic goals? Here are four steps to take:

  1. Brainstorm your Goals: The first step in setting realistic goals is to think about what you want to achieve. A decision must be made on which specific goals you wish to pursue and how they are to be achieved. Such goals could be things that make you feel happy, fulfilled, or successful.
  2. Do some Research: Researching on how to accomplish your set goals is important. For example, it will help clarify things like cost, time and effort needed, skill sets, etc.
  3. Set Goals that are SMART: After doing some research, set smaller goals needed to accomplish bigger goals. In setting these goals, consider making sure they are Small, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely (SMART). Such SMART goals help give direction and establish realistic time frames to pursue each goal.
  4. Be Committed and Accountable: Working towards a goal requires commitment and accountability. Being committed to a set goal will ensure you follow through regardless of challenges you may face. Being accountable on the other hand will help ensure that tasks are completed at the appropriate time.

In the next section, we will discuss some of the benefits of goal setting.

Five Important Benefits of Goal Setting

Goal setting forms the foundation from which we can build the life we hope to have. Simply put, if one does not set goals, chances are that they will accomplish nothing. On that note, here are five important benefits of goal setting. We hope they inspire you to set and pursue realistic goals in your life:

  1. Goals Guide and Align ones Focus: Goals help set focus. They give direction toward the next step that should be taken. Without goals, one’s abilities, skills and resources can never be put into full use.
  2. Goals help clarify what one wants in Life: Setting goals help determine one wants out of life. They help clarify what one considers a priority and keep one motivated till they are accomplished.
  3. They turn Dreams into achievable Steps: Another benefit of goal setting is that it breaks big dreams into smaller, achievable tasks. This ultimately helps create the momentum needed to accomplish the goal by providing small but multiple successes.
  4. Goals allow for Measured Progress: How do you measure how close you are to achieving your goals? One simple way is to break the goal down into simpler, individual tasks. By completing each task for that specific goal, you can determine how close you are to accomplishing the goal.
  5. Goal Setting builds Character: Setting and achieving goals helps build character. This is because it reveals the things you consider as priorities. It also serves as a feedback mechanism that helps show who you are so you can change or become better.
