Today on Innovate Today, we discuss what happens if you teach a man to fish according to Karl Marx. This is a funny post so remember to take this post with a pinch of salt.

The funny quote which formed the subject of this post is by Karl Marx, the German philosopher, economist and journalist. He is noted to have said

“Catch a man a fish, and you can sell it to him. Teach a man to fish, and you ruin a wonderful business opportunity.”

Of course, Karl Marx said this to be funny, especially considering that this quote does not exactly line up with his other political and philosophical ideas.

Brief information about Karl Marx

Karl Marx was born on 5th May, 1818 in Germany and studied Law and Philosophy in College. He published his political and philosophical thoughts which later came to be known as Marxism.

Karl Marx made several contributions to social development and progress and is awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) Award for his numerous contributions. He died on 14 March 1883. For a detailed history about his life and work, please read his Wikipedia and Britannica pages using the respective links.

What happens if you teach a man to fish?

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime” is an old and popular English proverb to which Karl Marx probably alluded to when he created his version of the quote. As the original quote explains, when you teach a man to fish, you equip him with tools he can use to feed himself in the future. While this is great for the man, according to Karl Marx, this ruins the wonderful business opportunity one could have to continually sell fish to the man.

What happens if you give a man a fish?

When you give a man a fish on the other hand, you only feed him for a few hours or for a day at best. This system keeps the man dependent on you for future meals and guarantees you a business in the sale of fish.

Final Thoughts

We believe it is better to teach a man to fish so he can be self sufficient as explained in the original quote. What do you think about Karl Marx’s quote? Is it better to keep people dependent on you for the sake of business? Or does equipping people with the tools they need to provide for themselves make a better community in the end?
