It’s not always easy being thankful. As a matter of fact, our true attitudes are exposed when things don’t go exactly the way we planned it.
It’s easy to be thankful when the sun is shining, birds are chirping and the winds are calm. However, are we able to keep that grateful attitude when the skies are dark with rain and the winds are howling in our face?
So far this month, we have considered the subject of thanksgiving and gratitude from two perspectives: The Power of Thanksgiving and Why we should be Thankful. Gratitude is an attitude
Earlier this month, we took a look at the difference between being thankful and being grateful. In both definitions, we saw that they are expressions of appreciation whether about happenings in one’s life or towards someone or something. We also came to see that being thankful is an attitude. It is a way of living life; being optimistic and grateful.
Being Thankful when Things are Tough
So how can we be thankful when everything seems to be going the wrong way? It was Charles Dickens, the great English Writer that said:
“Reflect upon your present blessings – of which every man has many – not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.”
So here are a few ways to remain thankful when things are tough:
- Reflect on your present blessings: Reflecting on the blessings you have will always stir up a sense of gratitude in you. Remember that the things you have and probably take for granted are the things others are working hard to get.
- Be Optimistic: The optimist will always have an edge over the pessimist because he sees possibility where others see a dead end.
- Remain Hopeful: Never lose hope. When hope is lost, all is lost.
- Remember that tough times never last forever.
Keep your head up when things are tough. Be optimistic and hopeful. Many times, it is attitude that makes all the difference regarding how willing other people are to help you out of a tough situation.
