So this month, we are taking a look at the subject of Gratitude and Thankfulness. What does it mean to be thankful and what does it mean to be grateful? Also, how are the two interconnected and why should we bother to be grateful?

The difference between being Thankful and being Grateful

As children, we learnt that we should say thank you when we were given something. It is one of the earliest qualities we teach children because of its importance. Being thankful however is more than just being courteous. It is about appreciating what you have, where you are, with those who are around you. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines thankfulness as being well pleased.

Gratitude on the other hand is the expression of thankfulness. It is a quality of thanks that is expressed outwardly towards others. It is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as a feeling of appreciation, contentment or pleasure.

While both thankfulness and gratitude are expressions of appreciation, thankfulness is inward while gratitude is an outward expression.

Why we should be Thankful

Regardless of your religious beliefs, thankfulness should be a quality we hold in high regard. Our quote today is from Frank A. Clark, the great American Congressman and Lawyer

“If a fellow isn’t thankful for what he’s got, he isn’t likely to be thankful for what he’s going to get.”

If we are not careful, sometimes, it is easy to lose sight of why we should be thankful. So here are some reasons why:

  1. For being alive: Life is always a reason to be thankful. Without life, everything else is meaningless
  2. For good health
  3. For friends and family
  4. Because expressing our thanks is the only way people know we appreciate them

As the end of the year draws nearer, let’s remember to be grateful for what we have and for those around us.

Our funny quote today is on the subject of thankfulness and is from an unknown author:
