Now, lets take a look at how purpose and direction give meaning to courage.

The Purpose of Courage

John F. Kennedy, President of the United States, was loved and admired by all. At the early age of 43, he rose to be the youngest man elected to the Presidency of the United States of America. He said the following about effort and courage:

Effort and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.

In simple terms, this means that while courage is essential to living a life of impact, it is not enough. We must also have purpose and direction to give our courage and efforts true meaning.

What do Purpose and Direction mean?

The Oxford dictionary defines purpose as the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. Direction on the other hand is a course along which someone or something moves”.

Without purpose and direction, effort and courage become diluted and carry less weight. In other words, purpose and direction give focus to both our courage and our efforts.

How to make use of Purpose and Direction

As discussed earlier, we are considering how courage is enhanced through purpose and direction. Purpose, whether for a cause, in business or in one’s personal life is important. Without it, life is haphazard and meaningless.

So how can one set a right purpose to pursue? We leave you with these three broad issues to consider when defining purpose:

  1. Does the cause or business you want to pursue benefit other people asides from yourself?
  2. Does the cause or business have a long term lifespan?
  3. Is the cause or business profitable financially or by other standards you consider as beneficial?

We encourage you to carefully consider these three questions. As you introspectively find answers to them, you will discover the power of purpose and direction.

As we conclude, we would like to ask how you have defined the purpose and direction of your business or of your life? What factors did you consider? Leave us a comment in our comments section below. We would love to hear from you.
