Seizing Opportunity

Opportunity, they say, is like a bald-headed man with a small patch of hair in front of his head. If you don’t grab hold of it while it’s confronting you, it will slip away. Funny as this may be to imagine, it is quite true. Untold opportunities have been lost due to carelessness and lack of preparation. So how do you seize opportunity when it confronts you? How does one recognize opportunity early enough to grab a hold of it and make the most of it? In this Innovate Today post, we explore some ways to do just that.

Before we get into that, we would like to share a few related posts we’ve written on the taking advantage of opportunities and preparing for success. We believe you will find them equally helpful:

That being said, lets take a look at an interesting quote by Milton Berle, the American Comedian and Actor about seizing opportunity.

A Quote on Opportunity by Milton Berle

“If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door”. – Milton Berle

Our inspiring quote today is by Milton Berle, Mr. Television himself. He was one of the first major Television Stars ever and had a career that spanned over 80 years. We will take a closer look at this quote of his later in this post.

Success equals Preparation plus Opportunity

Seizing opportunity is done primarily through preparation. As a matter of fact, there are no successful endeavors without adequate preparation. The saying goes that success is where preparation and opportunity meet. Grabbing hold of an opportunity you are not prepared for is just unproductive. This is because without the right skills, opportunity cannot be effectively used.

Skill acquisition is paramount, regardless of your field of endeavor. We must also remember that it’s not enough to have a college degree or an advanced degree. We must also be committed to continuous learning so that we can take advantage of a wide range of opportunities when they present themselves.

Hard Work and Seizing Opportunity

Another way to take advantage of opportunity is through diligence. Simply put, diligence is hard work. Lazy people never seem to be able to find the right opportunities. This is because opportunity often disguises itself as hard work.

When a person becomes committed to working hard, he discovers that more people want to work with him and more responsibility is given to him. More responsibility translates to more opportunities.

Create your Opportunity

Looking back at the wise words of Milton Berle in our earlier quote, we see that opportunity can be created. This can be done by taking calculated risks, preparation and skill acquisition, hard work and quite plainly, by hustling. Seizing opportunity opens doors.

Today we leave you with these final thoughts:

  1. Grab hold of opportunity when it presents itself.
  2. If opportunity doesn’t present itself, create your own opportunities.
  3. Start where you are and pursue your goals.
  4. Commit yourself to learning and skill development so that when opportunities come, you can take full advantage of them.

Do you have any stories on how you grabbed opportunity? Do you have an example of missed opportunities that you would like to share? Or an example of how you have created opportunities? Feel free to leave us a comment at the end of this post. We would love to hear from you.

Today’s Funny Quote

Success in almost any field Sloan Wilson

As is our custom, we would like to leave you with this funny quote by Sloan Wilson, the American Writer

Success in almost any field depends more on energy and drive than it does on intelligence. This explains why we have so many stupid leaders.
